I was putting my son to bed tonight and just as he was about to fall asleep he whispered the sweetest thing.   He put his face right up to my ear and while spitting all over me he said "Mom I love you just like you are everyday and every night, even when you yell at me."  Full disclosure, I had spent the previous ten minutes arguing loudly (i.e. yelling) while trying to get through our bedtime routine.  Also, is it really that hard to just brush your teeth without complaining?

The thing is that he really does love me just the way I am.  He loves my flaws as much as my strengths, loves me even though sometimes I yell, loves me on my good days and my bad days. This kid loves being snuggled up next to me on my sickest days (screw you Crohn's Disease), my crankiest days, the happiest days, and everything in between.

This year instead of saying "new year, new me" I am instead embracing the me that is already here.  This includes the screwing up, making mistakes and the doing my best to kick butt at this whole Mom thing. Trust me, I have plenty of goals for the upcoming year.  However, he doesn't want me to be a new me.  Maybe refining myself a bit wouldn't hurt and focusing on personal growth certainly is never a bad idea.  But I am trading in the fact that there has to be any major changes for me this year.  Maybe the change should be accepting that we are good enough and reminding ourselves that comparison really is the thief of all joy.

I promise you that even the women who look like they have this stuff all figured out are just as lost as we feel sometimes.

Happy New Year Mamas! May the first be with you and may your children let you sleep peacefully till 9am tomorrow! :)

NEW YEAR'S INTENTIONS FOR YOU AND YOUR KIDS

"After the chaos of the holidays, the new year feels like the perfect time to slow things down and reset.  The house and our minds can feel full from the hubbub of gifts, decor, and food. Try to simplify and declutter, starting with a clean house and clean slate. Involve the entire household in this process, kids included!

Kids play such an important role in how each day plays out in the home. Asking them to take part in setting the tone for the new year makes sense-- whether the hope is exciting and bright, or simple and safe. Giving them a voice and choice will empower them (and you!) to thrive throughout the year. "
